Witchcraft Is a Physical Practice: Why AI Cannot Do Spellwork for You

Never in a million years did I think I would write a post about this. However, I have noticed a few people coming to me lately stating they use AI for their spiritual work or ritual practices, intentions and manifestations, and even divination. Witchcraft is not something that happens because a screen generated a paragraph for you.

I know AI is becoming part of everything now, and there are people asking ChatGPT and other platforms to cast spells, perform rituals, contact spirits, read energy, or do witchcraft on their behalf. I understand why people may be curious about it, especially when they are new to witchcraft, overwhelmed, or looking for quick answers, but there is a very real difference between using technology as a tool and expecting it to replace an actual spiritual practice.

Witchcraft is physical. It is intentional and is something you take part in at an altar or through spiritual practices within your daily routines and lifestyle.

Ritual Work Happens in the Real World

A ritual is not only words, it is the person doing the work, the space they create, the focus they bring into it, the materials they choose, the energy they hold, and the intention they are putting into the working. Witchcraft and doing ritual work is not to be taken lightly or thrown about. Can you imagine what our ancestors would think? It may seem convenient, but it is not how the craft should be treated.

Ritual work is candle work, herbs, petitions, oils, smoke, prayer, divination, cleansing, spiritual baths, protection work, offerings, chants, or simply sitting at an altar and being fully present with what you are asking for.

An altar does not need to be large or elaborate and you don't need an entire room filled with expensive tools to have a real practice. It can easily be a small shelf, a box you keep private and tuck away, a table in your bedroom or office, a candle beside a meaningful object, or a small space where you can sit and focus without being interrupted. This is not limited, but again, it's all in the physical. The point is not how impressive it looks, the point is that it is yours, it is physical, and you are showing up to the work, learning, connecting authentically through your energy, focus, physical touch and voice.

Why AI Cannot Cast a Spell for You

It's simple, and it's in the name..."Artificial".

AI does not have an altar; it does not light a candle, it does not prepare herbs, cleanse a space, sit with your energy or feel the energy, work through smoke, read the smoke, hold a petition, read the candle flames, or put spiritual intention into a ritual.

It generates words. That is all.

A platform can give you an affirmation, a ritual outline, a list of herbs, or a general idea to explore, but it cannot replace the person doing the work. It cannot replace your hands, your focus, your discernment, your relationship with your own spiritual path, the energy involved, or the actual act of practicing.

Even with my own work, the ritual is not completed because I wrote feedback about it. The feedback comes after the physical work at my altar. The time and energy I took to cast the ritual from beginning to end, adjustments I made, the energy I connect with, the herbs I use, the crystals I place, and so on. The list literally goes on. Witchcraft and ritual work is not about "saying what you want"; it's about the practice, the intent, the connective nature within your own body, mind, and soul. The candle work, the herbal burn, the chant work, the prayer, the readings, the preparation, and the time spent sitting in the intention are the ritual itself.

That is the difference, and it's a huge one.

AI can also get things wrong. It can mix traditions together, give inaccurate information about herbs or correspondences, invent spiritual history, or make something sound convincing when it has no real grounding behind it. Do not treat every answer it gives you as spiritual truth or as something that has been passed down through a real practice.

Use your own judgment, your own insight, your own wisdom; learn from reliable teachers, guides, and mentors. Read books, lots and lots of books. Spend time in nature, take a moment to really connect with every piece of beauty around you. Learn your tools, correspondences, methods, and see what connects with you, because remember, not one practice is the same nor does it carry the same energy. Pay attention to your experiences, self-reflect, self-connect, and self-grow through physical practice. Build a relationship with your practice instead of only asking a machine what you should believe or do. TRUST ME. I have been a practicing witch for over 30 years.

Witchcraft Requires Your Presence. Period.

A large part of witchcraft is learning how to be present, you learn what certain herbs feel like in your hands, you learn how your own energy shifts when you are stressed, tired, focused, angry, grieving, or clear....you learn the difference between acting from panic and acting from intention and you learn what your altar means to you because you have spent time there. That cannot be downloaded or generated.

You cannot fully learn witchcraft without practicing it. You have to sit with it, make mistakes, learn what works for you, feel what connects with you, question things, research things, and grow into it over time. Becoming a witch or spiritual practitioner is not something you learn overnight, or even within a few months. It's a lifetime. There is no shortcut around that, and honestly, there shouldn't be.

The more technology grows, the more important it is to keep parts of your life real, physical, and connected to you. So with that said...light the candle yourself, write the petition yourself, go outside, touch the earth, learn the plants around you, pull your own cards, crush your own herbs, smell them, learn your own ways at your altar without needing someone or something else to tell you what every sign means. Learn the symbolism, connect with the energy and learn to read it, learn the patterns, learn the realm. Witchcraft was never meant to pull you further away from yourself; it is meant to bring you back to yourself, your intuition, your environment, your history, your choices, and your own ability to create meaning in your life.
